Safer States is a network of diverse environmental health coalitions and organizations in states around the country that works to protect families, communities, and the environment from our society’s heavy use of toxic chemicals. Through pragmatic policy at all levels of governance and focused market campaigns, we get chemicals off store shelves and out of bodies.
Safer States is uniquely positioned at the intersection of policy and market, allowing us to leverage grassroots organizing, legislative action, and corporate cooperation to reduce exposures to toxic chemicals. Since our founding, we have helped secure passage of protective policies across the country and worked to shift the market away from harmful chemicals such as lead, bisphenol A, and toxic flame retardants.
To accomplish our goal of reducing toxic chemical exposures, we focus on:
- Making it easier for consumers to make informed purchasing decisions and hold companies accountable through bills such as the pending California policy that would require companies to disclose the chemicals used in cleaning products.
- Pushing known toxic chemicals out of the marketplace such as toxic flame retardants from children’s products, mattresses, and furniture, and triclosan from personal care products.
- Working with the nation’s biggest retailers in partnership with Safer Chemicals Healthy Families’ Mind the Store campaign to develop policies that require identification and phase-out of harmful chemicals in products they sell.
Seventh Generation’s public support for policies that protect communities from toxic chemicals is a model for good corporate leadership. Being able to point to that leadership reinforces the idea that profitability does not have to come at the cost of public health.
